Metal on Its Way in the MetalWay Festival

Once again we are at that point of the year, where the weather change, the rain wets us all and allergies try to kill us day after day... Its also that time of year when summer is quickly approaching and you start to look at the calendar, expectant for the upcoming metal festivals all around Europe. Living in the south of Europe, Spain is not the place for many festivals, however, there are several smaller ones and one that is getting bigger and bigger each year. -Not to mention it is the only festival for which I do not need to travel far! Although it is nearby and it has always had very good line-up, year after year it kills me that I have been unable to enjoy this event due to so many unwanted circumstances. Finally, last year, when I was going to go, press and photo pass in hand, dressed in my darkest of blacks, nature made sure it was impossible to go once again. It was cancelled. By sending an icy storm of rain, wind and ice, the entire festival was sent to hell, an icy hell, if you ask me!

This year Metalway treats all those who wish to attend with a free preview of what to expect in the four days of festival with an open doors on Friday, June 19th. The following four days are split between Saturday and Sunday, June 20th and 21st, and the following Friday and Saturday, June 25th and 26th. Although I believe it would have been better to have it all back to back, people who come to see the concert, during the week can enjoy the city and region as well as go to nearby, 3 hour drive, beaches or mountains. In any case I would encourage everyone to check out the festival. Once again they have a promising line-up, from the return of one of Spains rock bands, Baron Rojo reunion, to the newest addition to the music world, former Nightwish singer Tarja. It will be nice to see what she offers without the Nightwish backdrop. I am also looking forward to the Finnish violoncello repertoire, Apocalyptica, or Opeths dark sounding melodies, as well as Dark Tranquilitys symphonies among so many others who are going to take part in this festival. I would go on and on, but just look at their site and you might just understand what I am talking about!

Swedish progressive metallers OPETH have released a very special digital EP called "Burden" featuring two rare B-sides, including a much-sought-after cover of ALICE IN CHAINS' "Would?" and a track previously available for a limited time only, "Mellotron Heart".

OPETH's latest video for "Burden" received its online premiere on November 4. While Danish director Lasse Hoile (DREAM THEATER, PORCUPINE TREE, STEVEN WILSON) shot and directed the storyline in Denmark, OPETH filmed the band performance at the Vogue theater in Vancouver, Canada.

"The Roundhouse Tapes", the long-awaited new DVD from OPETH, was released in Europe on Peaceville Records on October 27 (UK - November 10, USA - November 11).

"The Roundhouse Tapes" contains a critically acclaimed OPETH performance recorded at The Roundhouse, London in 2006. Described by Rock Sound as "a show of spectacular greatness in this legendary venue & an amazing performance by one of Europe's premier epic metal bands," the DVD perfectly captures the band in scintillating form playing a selection of classics from throughout their career.

Metallica have just premiered the video for their single "The Day That Never Comes" on their MySpace page. The epic clip was directed by Danish director Thomas Vinterberg and filmed this past July in southern California. On working with the acclaimed filmmaker, [guitarist] James Hetfield explained to MTV.com, "That's the beauty, I think, of writing vague but powerful lyrics that someone like a movie director can interpret it in his own way and obviously, someone creative is able to take the metaphors and apply them to whatever he needs in his own life."
